Kyle Baker posted this image of Isaiah Bradley from Baker and Morales’  Truth: Red, White & Black series.  Baker tagged the image with “For an upcoming Marvel gig”.  Could this be the answer to the big secret of Reborn #1 and Captain America #600 that has everyone in a twitter lately?  There has been a lot of speculation about a black Captain America since the first star-on-black-background image was pushed out from the House of Ideas a couple of months ago.

The speculators have further claimed the July 13 early release date is also going to tie into the announcement that Will Smith will play Cap in the coming Captain America movie.

Interestingly no one has made any mention to the publicity bit featuring Rikki Barnes.  Maybe she’ll be the new sidekick? And what if all of this plays out to be true, what then of the current Bucky Cap?

It’s all rumor and speculation, mixed in with a bit of truth that gets everyone up in arms.  All of the hints being dropped about is a great example of viral marketing.

It’s just too bad all the chatter is being bandied about throughout the comic book Intardwebz, and not in other media.  This kind of speculation and talk could have a lot of positive long term impact for comics in general, instead of the the two day coverage coming from one select mass media outlet on July 13, 2009 to get one company a crap load of money in the short term.

The real story in all of this is, “Who is Marvel teaming up with for this “breaking” story?” Newsweek, The New York Times, Steve Colbert?

I’ll let the Major Spoiler Legion use the comment section below to shout out their thoughts, rants, and ideas.  Keep it civil.

Marvel has announced that the Ed Brubaker penned Captain America #50 is going back to press with a variant cover.  The issue (reviewed here) features Bucky celebrating his birthday in a very interesting way.  The second printing variant will be on the stands on June 10, 2009, with issue #600 arriving a week later on June 17, 2009.

World War II is a watershed in almost every comic book continuity, from DC’s JSA to Marvel’s Namor and Cap, to the various unlikely heroes of Americomics, Project Superpowers, or even Image’s Super-Patriot.  The problem we run into is that the war now ended over SIXTY YEARS ago, and the ties to that long-forgotten time are looser than ever.  (Heck, even Frank Castle’s Vietnam was 40 years ago now…)  So, when your body is eighty, and your mind is twenty, but your robot arm is 55, you can imagine it makes holidays a bit tetchy.

It’s always sad to realize that a beloved joke has died…  We are gathered here to mark the passing of “Former Captain America Steve Rogers is STILL dead…”  A hearty joke he was, always ready to liven up a review, or kill seven seconds in a podcast.  We will remember “Former Captain America Steve Rogers is STILL dead” not for what he did, but for what he stood for.  Repetition.  Repetition.  Repetition.  Jocularity.  Repetition.  Stealing from Chevy Chase, back when he was still funny.  And repetition….  And we know that “Former Captain America Steve Rogers is STILL dead” may be gone from our presence, but he will never be gone from our hearts.  Or, honestly, from our Captain America reviews, because let’s be honest here:  I’ve never been quite as funny as I think I am, but I’m considerably funnier than you think I am.  Amen.

To celebrate the holiday, Marvel is releasing a free digital comic featuring Captain America and Spider-Man at the Gettysburg Address.  This digital comic arrives hot on the heels of The Amazing Spider-Man #583, where Spider-Man met President Obama.

“We were completely blown away by the overwhelming response to the Spidey Meets the President storyline.  Comic book shops have not been able to keep it on shelves, so we thought it would a fitting way to celebrate President’s Day by offering free online access to all fans to view and read the storyline – including some exclusive new content – only at Marvel Digital Comics Unlimited,” says Dan Buckley, President of Marvel Publishing.  “And in celebration of President Lincoln’s historic Bicentennial, we could think of no better tribute in the Marvel Universe than to have Spider-Man and Cap honoring one of his enduring legacies, the Gettysburg Address.”

While the “Gettysburg Distress” issue is free, users will need to create an account to access the content.  I wonder when Marvel will release Spider-Man meets Nixon, or the super-secret Wolverine/Jimmy Carter crossover issue.

Or at least the wilds next to my nightstand.  For those of you who pay attention, you might possibly have noticed a dearth of material from me of late.  Indeed, I’ve been producing a virtual plethora of dearth.  Just after Thanksgiving, during the preparation for the Saturn Girl Hero History, my valiant Vaio laptop stopped speaking to my scanner.  Repairs were initiated, but once that was complete, the scanner suddenly burned out.  I have been limping by with a trick or two (points for anyone who can identify what they are) until the MONITOR on my laptop kakked out right before Christmas.  Last week, with Holiday fundage in hand, I went to the electronics shop to purchase a new scanner and get back on track.  During the upload process, my system indicated that it had to reboot, and that a deep defrag was necessary.  After the defrag, the system refused to boot up at all…  Long story short?  I now have a laptop computer hooked up to a giant monitor, with a scanner that may not work, desperately transferring files to a remote hard drive in preparations for a complete system restore.  More updates as events warrant.
