Captain America #35

CAPA035picon.jpg

Oh how great it was to see a new Captain America come in to the fold last month. Captain America issue number 34 was truly one of the classics. But let me get this straight right from the start, to avoid any of the presumably already half written emails I would be getting. Steve Rogers was, is, and always will be, the only Captain America in my eyes.

James Buchanan “Bucky” Barnes is just filling in for his lifelong friend until he comes back.

Captain America #31

Or - “This Just In: Former Captain America Steve Rogers is STILL Dead.”

In a way, it was kind of nice to not write this weekend… I went to the pumpkin patch with my daughter and picked a gourd, then made a Jack-O-Lantern. Still didn’t do any laundry, but a flying tent smashed my windshield, which was kind of exciting. ‘Course, it should be noted that the cracks in my glass are nothing compared to the cracks showing in the psyche of one James Buchanan Barnes. (See what I did there?) Now that the Winter Soldier has been captured by the Red Skull, I suspect that there’s some unpleasantness afoot (and this in a book where a woman is pregnant by the man she murdered under hypnotic suggestions, folks.)

Let’s say you were living in the year 1985, enjoying Mark Gruenwald’s run on Captain America Volume 5. He’s been crafting interesting stories every month (even the stuff with Flag-Smasher) but suddenly, a time machine appears, and out steps a wild-haired madman who tells you of the far-flung autumn of 2007! “Uhhh… Marty! Marty! We’ve got to do something about the future!! Captain America is dead! Bucky, the Falcon, and Sharon Carter are headlining his book! We’ve got to go… Back To The Future!!!!” Would you expect during this conversation that the stories would actually be not only good, but REALLY good? ‘Cause if not, then expect Biff to give you a few quick raps on the melon… “Hello? McFly?”

Captain America Sells Out

Friday, September 14th, 2007--by Stephen Schleicher

CaptainAmericaTheChosenpico.jpg

For a dead guy Steve Rogers is sure making the rounds in the Marvel U. In the Chosen, David Morrell of Rambo fame, tells the tale of Corporal James Newman’s life as a soldier in Afghanistan who ends up getting a little help from Captain America. I’m not sure if it is supposed to be part of regular continuity or not (it seems to be a Marvel Knights tale), but if the sudden appearance of Cap to a soldier having a crisis is a clue, it wouldn’t surprise me at all to find out Mr. Newman ends up wearing the red, white, and blue at some point.

If you didn’t get the first issue, Marvel has announced it will be going back to press, with the reprint arriving in stores October 17, 2007 for $3.99.

Take the jump for the full look at the all new cover by Mitch Breitweiser.
