Or – “I Decided To Trick Or Treat With My Kid Instead… Sorry.”

The MUSIC MEEEISSSSTERRRR! Sing the song that the world wants to heeeear! Man, I’ve had that stuck in my head for WEEKS, now. This particular RFR was meant to go up last week, just in time for the annual festival of half-price chocolate, but various things conspired to keep me from completing it until today. For those of you who can’t get enough comic review goodness, I’ve got the cowbell to slake your fever, and it’s time to ask ourselves, baby, what’s the word? In the words of the great philosopher Aloysius Bundy: “Let’s ROCK.”

“The year is 1987, and N.A.S.A. launches the last of America’s deep space probes. In a freak mishap Ranger 3 and its pilot Captain William ‘Buck’ Rogers are blown out of their trajectory into an orbit which freezes his life support systems, and returns Buck Rogers to Earth five-hundred years later.” Don’t worry, this series is nothing like the 1980’s television series – and that’s not necessarily a good thing.

Arriving in stores this week (April 22, 2009) is Dynamite Entertainment’s latest series – Buck Rogers. For most of us, the Gil Gerard series from 1979 is probably the only exposure we’ve had to the futuristic hero. And while there have been more recent video and role playing games based on the universe created by Philip Francis Nowlan, it takes a brand new comic book series to bring the excitement back to reading comics set in the far future.

The futuristic adventures of Buck Rogers from Dynamite Entertainment are spanning the comics Galaxy toward fans well in time for Free Comic Book Day (May 2nd), with the all-original #0 issue available to fans for just .25 cents! Writer Scott (Batman) Beatty and artist Carlos Rafael, along with cover art by John Cassaday (and a special “sneak peek”: Alex Ross incentive cover!), present an original 12 page comic book adventure – “The Death of Buck Rogers”! But the journey doesn’t stop there… Buck Rogers #1 is set for release in June with 50/50 cover artists Alex Ross and John Cassaday! Demand is high for Dynamite’s Buck Rogers, with initial sales of the #0 issue clocking in at close to 75,000 copies for the Direct Market, and Dynamite planning an aggressive 20% overprint to meet retailer demand for re-orders. Issue #0 will ship from Dynamite to be in stores by April 22nd, and retailers can decide to sell the books right away (give away the books right away for those that choose to), or save them for Free Comic Book Day.
The twenty-five cent Buck Rogers #0 edition arrives in stores on May 2, 2009, prompting the company to start the publicity early by sending us the cover to the issue.
In addition, take the jump to see the covers to the first issue by Alex Ross and John Cassaday.

Dynamite Entertainment has announced the prelude issue (#0) of the company’s upcoming Buck Rogers series will feature a cover price of 25-cents.
“Dynamite’s reinvention of Buck Rogers will follow the path Dynamite has blazed with its previous successful titles, and to ensure the comics audience can read the launch, we’re releasing the comic at a .25¢ cover price. Dynamite is proud to be instrumental in re-inventing and continuing the legacies of historical characters and their worlds with creators who can execute great stories. We’re equally proud of the consistent critical and fan responses to our efforts, and are confident that Scott Beatty and Carlos Rafael will deliver. We’re confident that Buck Rogers will extend Dynamite’s own tradition of creating and bringing together generations of fans in the most thrilling way possible, which is why we are launching it at an Introductory Priced. This will allow retailers to stock it, and fans to try it, and see the quality, inexpensively.” stated Dynamite President Nick Barrucci.
The John Cassaday covered zero issue will arrive in May, 2009.

I haven’t read too many glowing reviews of Frank Miller’s The Spirit, so I’m a little concerned that Miller’s next project might be a film adaptation of Buck Rogers.
Miller will write and direct his own big-screen take on the comic serial; while the creator has only begun to sketch ideas, it’s expected to be a darker take, with many of Miller’s signature visual elements and themes, such as corruption and redemption.
A darker take, huh? Doesn’t sound like a real stretch for the guy who might make Buck Rogers a priority over Sin City 2.
Nu Image/Millennium curretnly owns the rights to Buck Rogers, which it obtained from the Dille Estate earlier this year. It is expected Millennium will get screen credit, but will not be involved in the day-to-day production of the feature. I think the Sin City look will be played out after Sin City hits, so I’m thinking Buck Rogers might be better served by taking on a Sky Captain vibe.

Variety reports that Nu Image/Millennium Films has acquired the rights to bring Buck Rogers to the big screen. Previously the film rights were held by Disney, but the Dille Trust, which owns the character, turned the rights to Nu Image because it felt the Trust could have more control over the film.
Hopefully, Millennium will bring a new take on the classic tale, and moves us well away from the NBC series from the 1980s.
