Free Comics at Boom! Studios Site

Tuesday, July 15th, 2008--by Stephen Schleicher

BOOM_WebComics_Nav_frontpage.jpg

Boom! Studios has updated its site, and now features free comic preview for readers.

At launch, each series will have a handful of pages already posted so that fans can immediately sample the tone, characters, and storyline of each series.  Thereafter, BOOM! will update each series with a page a day, averaging five pages of content per series, per week.

“We’re seeing a greater demand for digital comics, whether it be from casual readers or hardcore fans,” said BOOM! Studios Editor-in-Chief Mark Waid. “Partnering with MySpace showed us that releasing our books for free online actually helped our sales. After sampling BOOM! comics electronically, readers went out to buy physical copies. The BOOM! Webcomic site will continue spearheading this game-changing initiative.”

The updated Boom! Studios website is live now.

Matt Gagnon Upped to Managing Editor of Boom! Studios

Thursday, July 10th, 2008--by Stephen Schleicher

Matt_Gagnon.jpg

Boom! Studios has announced Matt Gagnon has been promoted to Managing Editor of Boom! Studios.  Gagnon first started at Boom! as the editor of the Farscape comic line.  He will be under the supervision of EOC Mark Waid as he moves into his new position.

“Matt Gagnon is like the Michael Clayton of comics. At his previous job at Meltdown, I saw him in action, making things happen and fixing problems. At BOOM! he’s done the same thing, to the point where I probably ought to start fearing for my job,” said BOOM! Studios Editor-in-Chief Mark Waid.

Hopefully Mr. Waid isn’t fearing for his job, because he’s doing one hell of a job himself.  Congrats to Matt for his promotion.

Boom! Launches Galveston

Wednesday, July 9th, 2008--by Stephen Schleicher

picon.jpg

I know people that will sit around and debate Pirates vs. Ninjas, so I wonder how the conversation will turn once Boom! Studios releases Galveston that has cowboys fighting pirates.  Galveston is a new mini-series written by Tom Peyer and Mark Rahner with art by Greg Scott.  The writing duo are pitting pirate Jean Lafitte against Texas big wig Jim Bowie, and the fact the writers are incorporating facts from the time period, should make this a really interesting read.

“Bowie could throw down,” said Rahner.  “This is the dude who once had a gun broken over his head, then got run through with a sword cane, and while the attacker was planting a foot on his chest to pull out the sword, Bowie gutted him with his legendary big knife. Then he got shot and stabbed again while the sword was still hanging out of him.  This won’t be any PIRATES OF THE CARRIBEAN.”

Hey everybody!  If you have been listening to the Major Spoilers Podcast since the beginning, you know we are big big fans of Mark Waid.  Well tonight, Matthew, Rodrigo and I had the pleasure of chatting it up with Mr. Waid, the Editor in Chief of Boom! Studios, for next week’s show.

We had a limited time, but we were able to cover topics ranging from his tenure at Boom!, differences in small and big companies, the problems with the industry (and possible fixes), what Mr. Waid likes and dislikes about his own work, and the idea of leaving behind a legacy that others can build on.  We even used some of your questions during our chat.  It was a great conversation, and we hope you all download the show when it hits the interwebs next week.  You’ll also want to listen to the show to find out what “special” gift we have for all of you to celebrate Major Spoilers’ Second Birthday.

WOOT! I’m flying high on cloud right now!

Okay, H.P. Lovecraft fans, get your cyclopean engines started as Boom! Studios has announced a four issue mini-series based on the Necronomicon religious text featured in many of Lovecraft’s horror tales.

In August Boom! Studios will release Necronomicon written by William Messner-Loebs, with art by Andrew Ritchie. The company has sent Major Spoilers a sneak peek of the issue, which might cause some of you night terrors, and is sure to get the religious people all up in arms.

“Lovecraft believed - and he was right - that the scariest things are those least understood. Thus he kept everything as vague as he could - the mythos, the monsters, even the horrid and grisly fates of his heroes,” said NECRONOMICON writer William Messner-Loebs. “Well, my job, given me by the esteemed BOOM!, is to describe, explicate, explain and anatomize said book and lay its mysteries bare, all whilst causing as much havoc as I can.”
