Riddle me this:  When is Batman and the Outsiders not Batman and the Outsiders?

outsiders14picon.jpg

The answer of course Dear Reader, is when the issue features neither Batman nor the Outsiders.  But there in lies the juicy bits of the issue.  With the “death” of Batman, there has been chaos throughout Gotham City.  And while there are those that are scrambling to fill in the void, there are few who are willing to step up with a new plan.  Someone like Batman’s daughter.

Wha?

The issue features neither Batman nor the Outsiders

outsiders13picon.jpg

A strange thing happens when a single character dips his finger into multiple titles.  Take Batman, for example.  He appears, or appeared if you want to be more specific, in Batman, Detective Comics, JLA, Batman and the Outsiders, Batgirl, Nightwing, Robin, Trinity, Final Crisis, Superman/Batman, and various other appearances and guest spots in the rest of the DC universe.  When some brainiac decides it would be a great idea to kill Batman (figuratively or literally, we don’t know yet) it causes nothing but problems in the rest of the titles.  Batman and the Outsiders is a perfectly example of one story screwing another.

“I ♥ You, The Goddamn Batman!”

allstarbatmanandrobin10picon.jpg

Yes, it’s true – I’ve not liked a single issue of Batman R.I.P.  but that doesn’t mean I don’t love Batman.  While the masses seem to swallow everything Grant Morrison has to offer in the pages of Batman, the better story can actually be found in the pages of All-Star Batman and Robin, something the masses seem to detest.  Yes, I know I’m the lone voice on both of these Batman fronts, but what’s a person to do?

Answer:  Love the Goddamn Batman!

I literally feel that I cannot say enough good things about Batman Confidential at the moment. I picked it up for the first time 5 issues ago, with the beginning of ‘The Bat & The Cat’ storyline (because for nothing else, I love Barbara Gordon) and I honestly wonder if I’ll be able to put it down again. With this, the final issue in the 5-issue arc, I once again have trouble finding any fault with the book.

Batgirl is joining the forces of good in the upcoming LEGO Batman game from Lego and Warner Bros.  The Gotham Heroine arrives in the game in September.   Does this mean we’ll get a Batgirl mini-fig in future LEGO sets?

More pics after the jump.

Issue #20 of Batman Confidential continues ‘The Bat and the Cat’ storyline by adding another Bat to the mix, in the fourth part of this five part series. Seeing as the review for #19 is probably not far away from this sentence, I won’t bother reviewing what has happened, except to say that it is awesome!

In lieu of the fact that I may not have been the only one to miss the release of Batman Confidential #19, I’ve decided, in the face of the release of issue #20, to review both. I won’t do it at the same time, because that would take away from the fact that these are two really great issues, and deserved of their own time in the sun.

Set relatively soon after Bruce Wayne took up the mantle of the Batman, Batman Confidential tells the stories of Batman’s early outings.  I first jumped on to the book at issue 17, because of the Batgirl/Barbara Gordon story being told. I am so glad that I did, and look forward to getting my hands on a TPB of the earlier issues.

Batman Confidential #17 and #18 tell the story of Batgirl’s first encounter with Catwoman. There isn’t a Batman to be found in these issues, and when we’re dealing with one of my favorite characters, Batgirl, the less Batman the better.

I had the fortune of visiting a comic shop over the weekend, where I was able to pick up a whole stack of Showcase Presents collections. I really love these collections for a couple of reasons;

  • They are relatively inexpensive (500 pages for only $17!)
  • A great many of the stories tie in directly to current goings on in the DCU
  • The Silver Age tales are all age appropriate, which means my son can read them all he wants and I won’t have to worry about content that may not be suitable for someone under the age of 7

But I was a little disappointed in the cover to Showcase Presents: Batgirl.

But my disappointment isn’t the same as the disappointment that has caused the pipes of the Interweb to be clogged by those crying foul.

Or – “What Actually Happened When The Question Was Popped…”

NW13.jpg

DC Comics is evil. There’s no other explanation for it… Before Infinite Crisis, Dick Grayson the former Boy Wonder proposed marriage to Barbara Gordon, the former Dominoed Daredoll, and she said “Yes.” Then, the One Year Later gap arrived, and afterwards, Dick was in New York butting heads with Jason Todd, and Babs was running the Birds of Prey, and never the twain shall meet. Then, they really twisted the knife by giving Dick a quickie affair with some bimbo named “Cheyenne,” because apparently “Faberg” and “Fmal Pajama” (pronounced “fehMAHlay PAjahmah”) were taken by the new girls at Penguin’s strip club. Now, finally, the story can be told… what happened to the Bat-Weddin’?

Jim Lee has been kind enough to give us a sneak peek at the next three covers to DC’s All Star Batman and Robin series. The pencils look great, and it looks like we’ll see more Black Canary and Batgirl before it is all done. According to Jim’s site, issue #5 SHOULD come out May 16, with issue #6 hitting stores July 25, and issue #7 arriving sometime in September.

Well hot damn! This is/was a series I had high hopes for, but to tell you the truth, before I read issue #5, I better reread the first four as I have completely forgotten what is going on.

Take the jump for the bigguns!

DC has released to sneak peeks for titles shipping this week. First up is Nightwing Annual #2, which promises to fill in some of the missing holes prior to Infinite Crisis. Following that it is another team up in Superman/Batman #34 as the world’s finest take on the Metal Men. Both issues hit stores April 18.

encyclopbatman.jpgDynamic Forces announced it is taking preorders for The Original Encyclopedia of Comic Book Heroes Volume 1 signed by artist Neal Adams.

Originally published in 1976, this exhaustive volume – the first in a series – includes every piece of information you could want to know about Batman, his allies and enemies, weapons in his war on crime, and his adventures across the decades!

I’ve purchased a few signed Dynamic Forces issues, and have been genuinely pleased with the results (signed Batman/Spirit – WOOT!).

The title will ship in June.

animefigurespicon.jpg

DC has unveiled a new series of figures based on several DC Superheroines, all done in Anime style. First up will be Supergirl, Powergirl, Batgirl, and Catwoman. A shot taken at the booth indicates future figures will include Hawkgirl, Wonder Woman, Poison Ivy, and evil Supergirl. Not sure I like the rendition of the figures, but you can bet fanboys will snatch these figures up to display on their shelves.

Manga and Anime are becoming a big deal in the United States, so why not cash in on the trend? Take the jump for the full color images.

It’s pretty obvious I’ve become a Josh Howard fan over the last six months. I dig his art style, and think his writing skills have matured to the point where he is really developing a strong storyline with Dead@17. Over the next couple of months, we’ll see Howard release Eve, and Sasquatch, but what if he were to draw Batgirl?

Head over to Josh’s blog site to see the full version. I wonder if he’d sell it to me for cheap? (grin).
