According to the latest promotional campaign, Peter Parker is out of a job (which probably explains why Iron Man graces the variant cover of issue #628), and it looks like it is up to Mark Waid to help Spidey pick up the pieces.

How does Spider-Man fight crime without a job to pay for spider-bills? Find out in the extra-sized Amazing Spider-Man #628, as Mark Waid, Tom Peyer and Todd Nauck present a previously unannounced second story featuring Peter’s struggle to find a job and put his life back together. Meanwhile, the Absorbing Man has some evil intentions in mind and only Spider-Man can stop him…but can the wall-crawler even afford to buy the web fluid needed to stop this threat? All this, plus your regular full-length feature, with Spider-Man versus the Juggernaut!

Amazing Spider-Man #628 arrives April 14, 2010 and features a cover price of $3.99.

Marvel sent out this promo image for the upcoming Amazing Spider-Man #623, that arrives on stands this week.

“Peter Parker’s been through some rough times lately, with all of his deadliest foes returning, and he couldn’t lose his job at a worse time” said Senior Editor Steve Wacker in a prepared statement. “He’s going to struggle with unemployment and trying to save the city while he can barely afford to keep a roof over his head.”

Oh, Snap! This week, the Major Spoilers Crew is taking a look at one of the most important Spider-Man stories published – The Night Gwen Stacy Died.

“The Night Gwen Stacy Died” is a story arc of the Marvel Comics comic book series The Amazing Spider-Man #121-122 (June-July 1973), that became a watershed event in the life of the superhero Spider-Man, one of popular culture’s most enduring and recognizable fictional characters. The two-issue story, written by Gerry Conway, with pencil art by Gil Kane and inking by John Romita Sr. and Tony Mortellaro, features Spider-Man’s fight against his archnemesis, the Green Goblin, who has abducted his girlfriend Gwen Stacy and lured him to the George Washington Bridge.

Or – “There Are Old Pilots And Bold Pilots, But Few Old, Bold Pilots…”

I saw recently that a clinical study proved that January 25th is the most depressing day of the entire year, scientifically and unequivocally.  While I don’t disagree with that sentiment (especially as it regards the attendance of employees in Midwestern United States call centers) I find it fascinating that somebody actually got paid to try and figure out something that silly and (let’s be honest, here) banal.  Still and all, it’s the kind of story that you read and go, “Yeah, I can see that.”  Thus, to ease your slowly-receding ennui (and Stephen’s not-so-slowly receding hairline) I give you another batch of coverage of comics you might have read, but forgot to laugh at the first time…  Rapid-Fire Style!

This week on the Major Spoilers Podcast, we dive into Marvel territory once again as the crew takes a look at Nothing Can Stop the Juggernaut.

Black Tom Cassidy dispatches the Juggernaut to kidnap Madame Web in the hope that her psychic powers would help them defeat the X-Men. She receives a vision of their plan, and calls Peter Parker to ask him to stop the Juggernaut. Spider-Man makes many attempts to stop the Juggernaut, all of which end in failure. When the Juggernaut reaches Madame Web, he separates her from her life-support system, almost killing her. As Madame Web is taken to a hospital, Spider-Man again tries to stop the Juggernaut, finally trapping him in a vat of wet cement.

Here’s the final piece of the puzzle (except for that bit of Parker’s nose).

Did Joe Q, finally give in to pressure of Nerd-Rage, or was this part of his plan all along?

Another section of the puzzle arrived late yesterday from Marvel, and when joined with the first two parts, the bigger picture continues to emerge.  Did anyone think we would see the big reveal in this installment?  Is anyone still in the dark as to who Peter is reaching for?

Can you believe that Amazing Spider-Man has reached 600 issues?  Then maybe you’ll believe Amazing Spider-Man #600 sold out at the distributor level (although copies may still be available from your local comic shop), prompting Marvel to send the issue back to press with a new cover featuring John Romita Jr.’s interior art on the cover.

If you don’t have the Disney XD channel on your cable box, or if you are someone who just refuses to pay for overpriced drek, you can still get your 1990’s Spider-Man animated series fix over on the Marvel website. The first episode kicked off this week, and Marvel plans on releasing one new episode each week until all 65 of the original episodes are online for your amusement.

Best of all, the streaming video is free, so you won’t be out anything besides 30 minutes of your day.

… and apparently Mark Waid and Brian Michael Bendis are teaming up to write issue #601 of Amazing Spider-Man or somethin’…

Or – “How Venom Got His Groove Back…”

ASM4.jpg

Y’know what’s interesting?  Venom’s “new costume,” which has only appeared in the Amazing Spider-Man title, makes it’s reappearance in this issue, but only on the cover.  It didn’t get used in Thunderbolts, I don’t believe it’s in use in Dark Reign, and it’s not actually seen in the interiors.  Isn’t it odd that they’d roll out a new uniform for a high-profile villain like Venom and then NOT USE IT?

Here’s a bit of coolness for Spider-Man fans; John Romita Sr. will provide the variant cover to Amazing Spider-Man #600.  The issue arrives July 22, 2009.
