There’s something about golden age heroes and the time period in which their stories are set. I think it has something to do with the atomic bomb. Prior to the advent of the nuclear age, the world was still full of mystery, unexplored worlds, and magic. Times were simpler, with readers happy with their mystery men with tales set in far away worlds. Following the end of World War II those mystery men began to disappear into annals of history – fortunately the threat of the Nazi menace and the rising red menace gave heroes like Masquerade a reason to don the domino mask and fight crime.

Dynamite Entertainment has announced the third spin-off series from its popular Project Superpowers series, will be Masquerade. The four-issue mini-series will be written by Phil Hester of The Darkness fame, with art by Carlos Paul and Deborah Carita.
“Project Superpowers is such an epic, larger-than-life event that I’m thrilled to be allowed a small role in the event,” stated writer Phil Hester. “I believe Masquerade will give fans of the larger series a look at what makes these characters work on a human level. Masquerade is both a secret origin and a personal memoir of earth shaking events spanning from the golden age to the world of tomorrow.”

The readership seems to be divided on the return of the Earth-22 Superman. Some are in favor of the continuing adventures of the Kingdom Come storyline, even though the original follow up series tanked, while others are content with reliving the glory days in Absolute Editions. With the return of Magog, and E22 Superman, is DC trying to repeat the events from one universe to the other?

Laura Vandervoort – Supergirl from the CW’s Smallville, has joined the list of guests for the 2008 Emerald City Comicon scheduled for May 10th and 11th at the Washington State Convention and Trade Center in Seattle, Washington.

“‘Smallville’ is shot just a couple hours north of Seattle and we’ve had many requests for an actor from the show to appear, so we’re very excited to have the lovely and talented Ms. Vandervoort out to the convention this year,” says Organizer Jim Demonakos. “In addition, Jamie Bamber, who plays ‘Apollo’ on the new ‘Battlestar Galactica,’ will also be appearing.”
In addition to the growing list of guests, the show has been gathering show exclusives for attendees. One of the latest is free copy of SuperPowers #0 with an exclusive variant cover by Alex Ross, that you can see after the jump.

Marvel Comics has announced the big project Alex Ross will be working on that features Captain America in an in-continuity story.
The title of series is Avengers/Invaders:
Set in current continuity and featuring Marvel’s mightiest heroes from the past and present like never before, this 12-issue limited series will reunite the award winning writing team of Alex Ross and Jim Krueger (Earth X, Universe X) for their first Marvel project in over five years! Ross will also provide covers for all 12 issues, in addition to character designs for the series, which will be penciled by fan-favorite Steve Sadowski.
The series will be packaged by Dynamite Entertainment and will arrive in 2008.
“It means something more to the world today, and that’s of course why we’re taking this confusing thing of the return of Captain America, that essentially is truly the return of Captain America, not in the way you would have expected,” revealed Ross of the series. “A lot of rich, creative room comes from that being opened up to us.”
If you missed our initial report, you can take the jump and see the full cover.
Alex Ross is coming back to Marvel, and guess what project he is working on?

According to Ross, this project has been in the works for two years.
In an interview with Newsarama, Alex said he would be the designer, cover artist, and co-storyteller with Jim Krueger.
It could mean many things. It implies as much a return of Captain America, sure, as it also implies my return to Marvel – and maybe some other things. But I can tell you that my ego wasn’t fueling the design of that image…
Of course he is being very cryptic in his interview without giving anything major away. It does look like this is an in continuity story, so we’ll have to wait and see what that means. To me the image evokes a phoenix rising from the ashes, and it looks like Bucky is by his side. I wonder if Marvel will go down the Dark Phoenix Captain America route, after all it worked before…
