“‘Smallville’ is shot just a couple hours north of Seattle and we’ve had many requests for an actor from the show to appear, so we’re very excited to have the lovely and talented Ms. Vandervoort out to the convention this year,” says Organizer Jim Demonakos. “In addition, Jamie Bamber, who plays ‘Apollo’ on the new ‘Battlestar Galactica,’ will also be appearing.”

In addition to the growing list of guests, the show has been gathering show exclusives for attendees. One of the latest is free copy of SuperPowers #0 with an exclusive variant cover by Alex Ross, that you can see after the jump.

Alex Ross Captain America “Returns” Update

Tuesday, August 14th, 2007--by Stephen Schleicher

returnpicon.jpg

Marvel Comics has announced the big project Alex Ross will be working on that features Captain America in an in-continuity story.

The title of series is Avengers/Invaders:
Set in current continuity and featuring Marvel’s mightiest heroes from the past and present like never before, this 12-issue limited series will reunite the award winning writing team of Alex Ross and Jim Krueger (Earth X, Universe X) for their first Marvel project in over five years! Ross will also provide covers for all 12 issues, in addition to character designs for the series, which will be penciled by fan-favorite Steve Sadowski.

The series will be packaged by Dynamite Entertainment and will arrive in 2008.

“It means something more to the world today, and that’s of course why we’re taking this confusing thing of the return of Captain America, that essentially is truly the return of Captain America, not in the way you would have expected,” revealed Ross of the series. “A lot of rich, creative room comes from that being opened up to us.”

If you missed our initial report, you can take the jump and see the full cover.

Wiz World Chi: The Return

Saturday, August 11th, 2007--by Stephen Schleicher

Alex Ross is coming back to Marvel, and guess what project he is working on?

THE_RETURN.jpg

According to Ross, this project has been in the works for two years.

In an interview with Newsarama, Alex said he would be the designer, cover artist, and co-storyteller with Jim Krueger.

It could mean many things. It implies as much a return of Captain America, sure, as it also implies my return to Marvel – and maybe some other things. But I can tell you that my ego wasn’t fueling the design of that image…

Of course he is being very cryptic in his interview without giving anything major away. It does look like this is an in continuity story, so we’ll have to wait and see what that means.  To me the image evokes a phoenix rising from the ashes, and it looks like Bucky is by his side.  I wonder if Marvel will go down the Dark Phoenix Captain America route, after all it worked before…

UPDATED: Heroes Gets Hardcover Treatment

Thursday, July 26th, 2007--by Stephen Schleicher

DC Comics has acquired the rights to take the online Heroes comics, that gave readers a deeper glimpse into the characters from the hit NBC series, and collect them in a hardcover collection.

I’ve already downloaded the 43 Adobe PDF files from the Heroes website, and these are pretty good reads. But because these are online, graphic heavy, and you have to remember to go to the website each week to get the latest installment, I think a bound edition of the issues is a great idea.

In addition to the online strip by artists including Michael Turner, Marcus To, Mitch Gunnell and Phil Jimenez, the book will feature new covers by comic-book superstars Alex Ross and Jim Lee.

Also included will be art by Tim Sale.

An official announcement will be made later today by DC at the SDCC.

The complete Press Release follows after the jump.

Ross and Krueger on Superpowers

Thursday, July 19th, 2007--by Stephen Schleicher

Dynamite Entertainment has announced Superpowers will be the next project for Alex Ross and Jim Krueger. Apparently the project has been under development for the past three years and the first issue should see the light of day before the end of 2007.

“SUPERPOWERS will be unlike anything that Dynamite has done to date,” said Dynamite Publisher Nick Barrucci in a prepared statement. “Not only in terms of the subject matter, but in terms of every approach we’re taking with the series. After all, it’s not everyday you get to work with Alex Ross. Although, I should throw in a tease that I’m living the dream of two lifetimes as this is just one of the projects we have cooking with Alex in 2007 and 2008!”

Ross will be co-plotting the series and do the cover work and character designs, with the series written by Jim Krueger.

Take the jump for more information and the first painted piece for Superpowers that will also be a print available at Alex Ross’ booth at next week’s Comic-Con International in San Diego.

How Commander Steel Lost His Groove

Thursday, July 12th, 2007--by Stephen Schleicher

Apparently it is not a big deal for well-endowed lasses to show their goods on the cover of comics. Heck it seems it isn’t a big deal to have tentacle porn on the cover, but Zarquon save us should we see some guy’s package bulging out at us.
