Make sure you look at the panel after the Parting Shot

A year ago, about the time Booster Gold was disgraced in the eyes of Earth-1, Dan DiDio said Booster would become one of the best loved heroes of 52. Turns out he was right, but I never got the impression Booster was the hero of 52. I really got the feeling there was more to the Booster Gold is THE hero of the DCU than was let on in that series. If 52 saw Booster Gold in the minor leagues, then Booster Gold #1 sees Michael Jon Carter get the call to call from upstairs. If you are looking for a jump on book, this is it.

DC Comics has sent Major Spoilers the cover for the first trade of 52 arriving May 30, 2007. This is a great looking cover that I can’t stop looking at (mainly because I made it my new desktop wallpaper).
All I can say is this cover reminds me a great deal of the original Star Wars movie posters from the 70s. If this is indeed an homage, then I can’t wait to see the covers for the other trades when they come out.

“This is the end…the end my friend, the end…”

So this is it, the final bow, the big finale, the wrap up of the weekly series that has propelled some of the lesser known DC Characters to the forefront and engrossed readers for an entire year. This week, most of the unanswered questions get answered, Mr. Mind gets even more vile, the official return of the Multiverse, the return of someone we thought dead, and an appearance by someone who is apparently still dead.

Time to wrap up all the loose ends

Trips across the country to attend conventions, moving to new digs, trips to the hospital, and the rush to get caught back up with Major Spoilers pale in comparison to the traveling around the universe, trips through time and the rush to try and wrap up 52 in a neat and tidy package. This week my 52 review returns just in the nick of time.

Honestly, with all of the build up to DC’s World War III as part of 52, I was really disappointed with what I read. I think issue #50 was much better in telling the story than following emo Martian Manhunter around for four issues as we watched C-list heroes get killed by a Black Adam. And what the hell is up with issue #50 saying World War III Begins Here! when it actually began and ended making the four issue one-shots pretty much anti-climactic?
What did you think of DC’s WWIII event? Take the poll and cast your vote.

DC has announced the final issue of 52 will be 48 pages long! That’s over twice the number of pages we would normally get. DC doesn’t plan on hiking the price to compensate, stating the issue will still be $2.50.
The 52 writing team of Geoff Johns, Grant Morrison, Greg Rucka and Mark Waid and breakdown artist Keith Giffen are joined by top artists including pencillers Mike McKone, Justiniano, Darick Robertson, Eddy Barrows, Pat Olliffe and Chris Batista and inkers Andy Lanning, Rodney Ramos, Waldon Wong and Drew Geraci. Also, this issue features a special wraparound cover by acclaimed artist J.G. Jones.

Let’s take a breather for a minute

With all of the insanity that has been happening these last couple of weeks, it’s probably a good time for everyone to take a bit of a breather, come to grips with what has happened, and catch up with some loose storylines. Heck, there may even be a revelation or two thrown in for good measure.

How to bring a man-god down

Last week Black Adam discovered the Mads of Oolong Island were behind The Four Horsemen project that resulted in the death of his wife and brother-in-law. Having the power of seven gods should be enough to make anyone mess his lab coat, but not these crazy bunch of bastards.

“I will strike down upon thee with great vengeance and furious anger!”

There is a cliché in every action movie where the hero loses his loved one(s) and goes on an angry rampage seeking vengeance until he reaches the big boss. Black Adam takes on that cliché this week as 52 reaches a dark turning point in the DC Universe.

After Sobek took a really big bite out of Amon/Osiris last week, you just knew there was a major battle brewing. This week, Isis and Adam discover not one, but four villains out to bring them and their country down. How do you respond to the Four Horsemen of the Apokolips? It’s obvious isn’t it?

I could go for a little bite, how about you?

Kids tend to be pretty messed up, especially when it comes to guilt. Whether it is the guilt of stealing, telling a fib, or some other negligible action, it can really mess with a kid’s mind. No one is more messed up than Osiris over killing a member of the suicide squad. What’s a demi-god to do? Any other guilt ridden kid would run off to confession, and everything would be cleared up with a couple of prayers, but I don’t think that’s going to work here.

More tales draw to a close

We are 41 weeks into DC’s 52, and naturally many of the storylines need to build to a conclusion if we are to get to World War III before May. This week, we get to see more Green Lanterns, see Renee fight a dragon, learn how T.O. Morrow made his escape, and get a brief cameo by one of the big three. I have a much better outlook on 52 this week, and was generally pleased with the results.

And this issue ain’t nothin but a convenient way of wrapping up loose plot points with a convoluted resolution

I’m not a violent man, but I do like a good action sequence. Indiana Jones fighting hordes of Nazis and coming out with nary a scratch, Jean Claude kicking the snot out of a bar full of rednecks without breaking a sweat, or even The Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling giving each other a smack down week after glorious week all make for good times. Of course I know none of this stuff is real. If Dr. Jones, Van Damme, or even the GLOW gals were to actually do the things they pretend, they’d be reduced to bloody balls of flesh in moments. If I can dismiss all of this as fantasy and fun, why then does it bother me to no end that the Everyman storyline is wrapped up in a neat tidy package?

Just when you think you have a spare moment to sit down and write a well thought out review, some little thing you place in the back of your mind and forgot about pops up demanding attention. Thus I missed last week’s 52 review, but I’m making up for it now. Maybe I should have made this a Major Spoilers Retro Review…

DC Comics has provided Major Spoilers a breakdown of the trade paperbacks scheduled to ship this summer. If you are looking for something to keep you occupied while on flights to and from conventions, or to read while you are hiding away from the intense heat, there look to be some good titles on this list, including the second volume of DC’s 52.
