I see where you're coming from here, but I don't think that's quite correct. If that was the case, Sinbad (played by Matt Damon) would be rescuing the Madonna-turned-Jezebel from the guy in the cover.

But the big, burly, ethnically ambiguous set of pecs here is the protagonist. Clearly the role we (the male readers) are supposed to step into, thus gaining a half naked hottie and a +2 Keen Phallic Symbol.

The cover for issue #1 evokes the unspoken (but no less obvious) fear a lot of people project onto any burly brown-ish man: He's threatening, he has a weapon, and is 'defiling' a porcelain-skinned maiden who no doubt would otherwise be an obediant and virtuous lady had she not been seduced by this shirtless beast of a Mandingo. For those who cannot fathom (or will not explore) where I'm coming from, just stay tuned for the upcoming political ads: "A Vote for Obama means THIS for America". Thiat kind of rhetoric was successful against Harold Ford, Jr., and just ONE showing of the Willie Horton commercial sealed the deal for Bush 1 against Micheal Dukkakis. I'm not advocating any candidate or party, I'm just observing how such political tactics and societal mores get reinforced through entertainment mediums, even comic books.
