The Problem with WordPress 2.5

Well I made the STUPID mistake of upgrading to WordPress 2.5 late last night, and even though the update has been available for two weeks and claims to be functioning correctly, there are still many things that need fixing.

The major area centers around the many plugins we use on the site. The two favorite/most used/vital plugins that do not work are ImageManager and PodPress. ImageManger allows me to quickly and effectively upload images and place them in stories without the time waste of waiting for the interface to load. Hopefully this plugin will be updated in the next few weeks, so I stop pulling my hair out.

Podpress allows me to embed the Major Spoilers Podcast into the page. The plugin works, but it conflicts with the new Add Media feature of WP2.5. And with ImageManager not working, I have to turn this plugin off for the moment too.

Finally, the most excellent WP-Table plugin I had been using is not supported in 2.5 and the author has stated he is letting the plugin die.

STUPID! STUPID! STUPID!

That being said, there are some good things about WordPress 2.5, but right now, I’m too upset to mention them.

What does this mean for you? Right now you might experience some issues with the RSS feed if you are a subscriber, there are no image popups for new stories - although you can still click on thumbnails to see the larger view, just make use of that back button, and the embedded podcast is down for the moment, however you can still subscribe via iTunes or your favorite aggregator. (fixed).

If you experience any major difficulties or issues with the site, please let me know right away.

I’m in the process of getting these issues resolved as soon as possible, but for the most part you won’t notice a big difference on your end of the site.

I’m not what you call an early adopter. I upgraded to WP2.3 probably only 6 months ago, and was very happily cruising along with 2.1. As long as my backend isn’t compromised or there is a MAJOR security risk I like utilizing scripts and plugins that I write with whatever version of WP that I’m running at the time.

Upgrades never go smoothly regardless of your skill level or competency, it is something that I realized after my most recent WP snafu … when I upgraded to WP2.3. At the end of the day, WP remains the most viable blogging software available. There are times however I yearn for the olden days when I hardcoded ever single line and in-line image. Those were the days.

in the last two years, I’ve waited until the second or third (dot) release before making the upgrade. This time the enticement of actually having a working gallery and some of the other workflow enhancements were too much for me and I caved.

NEVER AGAIN! It will probably be WP3.5.8 before I upgrade again.
