Trying to have someone else play the iconic characters and shoehorn it into the movie continuity would really just ruin it. Besides, it's such an expansive universe, it'd be cool to see what else is going on, and how everyone is reacting to the same events we've already seen from one perspective. Actually, it could be really great if it focuses on personal stories of low-level everyman characters (of course, you do have to throw in something epic every once in a while).
