IDW Nabs Star Trek: New Frontier

IDW has announced Peter David’s Star Trek: New Frontier will be coming to the comic pages.
In the new story, Turnaround, the most dangerous experimental vessel in the galaxy-a prototype time ship-has vanished, and it appears that the man who stole it is none other than Starfleet Admiral Edward Jellico. Only Captain Mackenzie Calhoun and the crew of the Excalibur have a hope of finding him before the ship, intended purely for scientific exploration, is used to disrupt the space-time continuum.
For fans of the series, this is the first time the crew of the Excalibur has appeared in their own series (the crew did appear in a Wildstorm one-shot in 2000).

Not to be too terribly geeky, but …
I hope that isn’t meant to be the Excalibur there in that picture. The Excalibur was — at least, up until when I stopped reading the series — an Ambassador class starship (like the Enterprise-C) rather than a Galaxy class ship (like the Enterprise-D), and Jellico’s ship, prior to him being promoted to Admiral, was an Excelsior class (like the Enterprise-B).
Now, while it’s possible that the Excalibur has been upgraded (though, why they’d upgrade to a Galaxy Class when the Sovereign class is available) or that Jellico has simply taken command of a ship available to him through his position within Starfleet, it seems like the artist simply screwed up …

Indeed. Coming from a guy who named his blog after an obscure Star Trek IV reference … I applaud Jacin in their massive knowledge of the greater Star Trek universe.

Man, Jacin I just thought that was one of the worst covers I ever seen from simply an art perspective. I had no idea it was a mess from a Treknical perspective. I’m no more moved, but I echo Stephen “uh…wow…”

That’s meant to be obscure? I got that immediately and laughed… Of course, “The hell, I will” is a fave-rave in my parlance…
But then again, am I a good one to decide what is and is not obscure? Hm. It’s like a Zen koan.

The Ambassador class Excalibur was destroyed in about book 10 and replaced with a Galaxy Class ship. Not too enthused with the depictions of Calhoun and Shelby on the cover but the ship IS correct.
