Our Gene Gonzales/Legion of Super Heroes theme continues this week, with a look at Duo Damsel. Seems appropriate, since yesterday’s entry featured Computo.

Now I’m sure the Legion fans here know that her real name is Luornu Durgo. And that she originally had the power like all those from her planet, to split into three bodies. And that one of her bodies was destroyed by Computo, making her code name changed from Triplicate Girl to Duo Damsel. And that she married Chuck Taine, aka, Bouncing Boy. And that Dave Cockrum redesigned her costume to be an important part of the story where it first appeared. Yes, there are dozens of details about her that I’m sure we all know that come from the time period long past the Cockrum/Grell period of the Legion.  But I know one thing more: October 5 is her birthday – At least according to the 1976 SUPER DC CALENDAR that hangs in my studio. :)

  • Navarre:

Clearly a pin-up piece. I like her winsome smile.

She is more averagely built than most female illustrations. I think that works for the character because not every female should be built like a DD lingerie model.

Many of the Legion females do not require an Olympic level physique for their powers, even though all heroes need to train. So I like this even though the pose is a bit cheesy.

I hope he has one of Shrinking Violet.

  • I always loved her boots with the holes in them–so 70s!

But why does her costume here look like latex? Eek!

  • Navarre:

Yeah, it’s the bright markers with the white glare. Not that attractive.

But at least it’s a bit different than the usual material we see. Spandex is so 3008.

  • To be pedantically specific, it wasn’t Cockrum who redesigned this costume, it was one of several ideas submitted by fans and published in Adventure Comics 403. DD’s costume was designed by Nick Pascale and can be seen here. You might recall the original story in which this new costume appeared; the planet was named Pasnic, after Nick Pascale.

    • Navarre:

Wow, man. Dig Shrinking Violet’s go-go look. That’s far out, dude. But she’s one hip chick and I’m down with her.

  • Michael is correct. But, to be fair to Stephen, he grew up reading Batman, of all things, and isn’t aware of the wonders of the Legion.

Also worth noting: it’s the only fan-designed outfit that wasn’t absolutely appalling. (I apologize to anyone who may be reading who participated in those designs, but… Yeah. No es bueno.)
