DC’s Captain Marvel has been turned over to Bill Birch and Geoff Johns to get the screenplay treatment for a future film. This is a movie that has been passed around from writer to writer for seven years before Johns and Birch were tapped to co-write their take on the kid-turned-hero-when-magic-phrase-is-uttered story. No planned release date of actors have been named for this attempt at the film.

I wonder, will they call the movie SHAZAM!(or some version of it) and then actually refer to the hero as Captain Marvel, or will they go with calling him Shazam?

Maybe I’m just a Johns fanboy, but that guy could write the next Twilight movie and I’d go see it. He could start writing the comic book version of the Paris Hilton and Oprah superteam and I’d add it to my pull list. This story is nothing but good news to me.
Correct me if I’m wrong, but has Johns ever written a Captain Marvel story?

CM was a part of Johns’ run on “JSA” but I don’t know if he’s written a solo CM title
When rumors of this movie first started swirling around I always envisioned Patrick Warburton as Captain Marvel (if there was to be a comedic approach to the material) He’s probably a little too old these days though…Not sure who should play him, but at least you’ll have respect for the source material.

I am starting to think that only about half of the announced Geoff Johns projects are ever going to come to fruition. He is currently supposed to be working on about four monthly comics, two movies and a few TV episodes. My guess is that he starts scaling back his comic work for the higher-paying Hollywood stuff.
