The 1981 Sean Connery movie Outland is getting a remake thanks to Warner Bros. The original western space adventure was set on one of Jupiter’s moons, where a marshall (Connery) investigated a series of mysterious deaths, and had to take on the colony’s corporate administrators when no one else on the moon would help him. It was an interesting piece of film – nothing spectacular, and right on par with the 1981 space movie mentality. The remake will be quite different.
The story takes place in an orbiting city around the moon, where a cop uncovers a murderous conspiracy endangering the entire city. With a week before his retirement back to Earth, our hero has to choose between walking away with his wife, or taking on a private army with his overachieving ex-partner and wife’s former boyfriend.
Forget a remake of Outland, this sounds like a remake of Lethal Weapon, but in SPAAAAAAAACCCCCCE.

So, instead of just making a movie and letting it stand on it’s own, they want to claim it is a remake of Outlander?
Outlander was a… peculiar movie. Quite enjoyable, but like Blade Runner, was a product of it’s time.
So when are they going to be remaking Saturn 3? They could move it to Mars, turn Sally the Dog into Sally the Pot-Bellied pig, and make the android with the living brain into a rogue computer virus. It would be a blast! Oh, and Farrah Fawcett’s role could be played by Megan Fox! OOOOoooohhh! That would be a film classic instantly!

Outland is a “remake” of High Noon, the Gary Cooper western
This is on my list of one of the most under-appreciated sci-fi films of all time. It was “High Noon” in space. The acting and set design was low key, making it more realistic and durable than other futuristic movies of the time.
Why even associate the new film with “Outland” if you are changing the story, and the original wasn’t a hit?

My recollection of the film is a little fuzzy–it’s been a LONG time–but I’d love to see Steranko’s adaptation (serialized in Heavy Metal) released as a book…there’s some very nice stuff in there!
Hmmmph. Well I guess this ‘re-telling’ trend is picking up steam. Too bad they cant pick some films that I hated and redo THEM.
I can’t remember, is this one of the first films to use the ‘hey I can’t see with these stupid lights” helmet props??
Since this isn’t the Connery movie featuring gratutitous nudity and him in a big nappy (Diaper for my colonial friends) I’ll go on record and say I’m not interested :-D
