I’ll admit it, I purchased Captain America #600 and #601 on day of release, but both issues have sat in my To Read pile since.  For those who were hoping to get their hands on the issue, but weren’t able to because of people like me, Marvel announced the issue is going back to press, arriving at comic book stores on August 26, 2009.

One Response to “Captain America #601 Back to Press”

Too bad there’s no word of a pencils-only variant. Somebody got the brilliant idea to apply digital coloring directly over Colan’s notoriously difficult to ink pencils; only problem is, the colorist decided to put on an “Alex Ross For A Day” cap and proceeded to slather over those pencils completely (and amateurishly), leaving only the breakdowns as a visible remnant of Gene’s work.

Even Ross isn’t at his best when he goes in for weird color-lighting effects, and he’s the best he is at what he does (whether or not you like it!); lesser mortals shouldn’t even try. (Red is red, not purplish-pink, fer cryin’ out loud…)

That said, Colan’s sense of storytelling is still strong enough to carry the book’s visual weight, even as hacked-upon as it is. It helps that the story is pretty sharp, aside from one bit clearly (and hamfistedly) stolen from one of the finest films ever shot in and around Allegheny County.
