Dean: And with the F'Continuity mentality, people have to remember there are at least four different "origins" of Metallo. I don't remember too many people being upset by his origin in Superman: The Animated Series.

@Matthew Peterson:

There is no doubt that the show is largely built around mining and updating old comics concept. Sometimes the update is an improvement and often it is not. However, as comic fans we tend to get a little snooty about "cannon" and things like that. It is important to remember that Superman has a lot of fans that have never been in a comic book store.

They throw off some clunkers to be sure, but keep it in perspective. Vastly more people are familiar with the version of Clark Kent created by Al Gough and Miles Millar than the one currently appearing in DC Comics.

Yep... But comics did it first. Don't get me wrong, I think Smallville is one of the best marketed comic-book-originated series of all time, but it's still mostly predicated on variations upon themes that the comics developed first.

That said, dismissing it out of hand as "garbage" is rude as hell. Your mileage, as always, may vary.

Put another way, if DC Comics alienated every single person currently reading "Superman" and "Action Comics" and traded them for 3% of the current audience for "Smallville", then those titles would be the best selling comic titles by a wide margin.

Actually, three times as many people "watch that garbage" as the total sales for top 25 comics sold into the direct market... combined.
