Dark Knight Shot in IMAX

--by Stephen Schleicher

USA Today has a short article about The Dark Knight saying four scenes will be shot in IMAX, including the introduction of the Joker.

The director’s sequel to Batman Begins, The Dark Knight, will become the first feature film to be partly shot in the IMAX format, an expensive and cumbersome process that typically is the province of documentaries and short films.

Nolan will shoot four action sequences — including the introduction of the Joker, played by Heath Ledger — on IMAX.

There’s another photo of The Joker being shot with the IMAX camera, and sure enough the photo we ran a couple of weeks ago seems to confirm the new look.

    Am I missing something?

What is the point of shooting only part of the movie in the IMAX format?

  2. Stephen Schleicher Says:

Part of it is being friendly to the IMAX theatres so they will be more inclined to show your movie in their theatre. The other part is the huge format size you have to play with in order to get the most pristine image possible. However, unless there is a whole-lotta special effects going on in the above two shots, the only reason to shoot those two sequences is because it will be ultra detailed and sharp.

Okay, so the rest of the movie will come out fine on the IMAX screens, but the scenes shot specifically in the IMAX format will be extra sharp?

  4. Stephen Schleicher Says:

Yes, they should really stand out and look superb. If you have seen any of the nature films in IMAX you know how incredible these shots look. If used with the Joker scenes it could very easily make that portion of the film stand out the most.

Wow, as if I wasn’t excited enough about this movie already, and with the Harvey Dent site and then the Joker hacking into it, and now theses shots, I really doubt I can wait another year to see this movie.
