David Goyer is certainly in the news alot lately. First parting ways with the Flash, then all the gossip about the non-superhero movie SuperMax, and finally today Variety is reporting Goyer will direct “Magneto”, a spin-off movie from 20th Century Fox and Marvel Studios.
The first film will be an origin story with Magneto hunting down Nazi war criminals who tortured him, and coming to grips with his mutant abilities. Since it is a prequel to the X-films, Ian McKellen’s involvement is expected to be limited.
Goyer is developing the script that was written by Sheldon Turner.

And where is that Wolverine movie at?

As far as I can tell, the spin-off Wolverine movie is still in the works with Hugh Jackman and will be released before Magneto. Other than that, HR and Variety have no other production notes at the moment.

Do we really need a Magneto movie? The character has existed for decades with varying origins and travails. Marvel is over saturating the market with these films. Sure Mag’s origin story is a compelling one … but is there an audience for it? Not every one of these movies are going to be as good as Spiderman 2 or Batman Begins … so why make them? Like that SuperMax-Non Green Arrow-Green Arrow movie … how will that translate to the big screen. It’s going to be like that Stallone flick where he builds the Mustang in prison under the auspices of Donald Sutherland.
I think the Magneto movie is a simple equation for Hollywood: a spinoff of an existing, succesful franchise. Whether or not it has anything to do with internal logic, or the actual Magneto character we all know isn’t really a concern of theirs, I think.
