I think, as I see it, the main reason for such hatred towards mutants is that, well, they're born better. Its jealousy, at its heart. Easier to hate than accept the next step in evolution, especially when there's no way to get an invitation to that party. At least Ben was an accident. But Jean? She's beautiful, great smile, and more powerful than her 'fellow' humans. That's me 2 cents worth, anyway.
